El musical con libreto de Howard Lindsay y Russel Crouse, música de Richard Rodgers y letras de Oscar Hammerstein II se estrenó en Broadway en 1959. Su versión cinematográfica, con dirección de Robert Wise y protagonizada por Julie Andrews y Christopher Plummer, se estrenó en 1965, ganó cinco Óscars y es la tercera película que más entradas de cine ha vendido en la historia.
Su banda sonora (ganadora del Óscar) a cargo de Irwin Kostal permaneció en el top 10 Billboard estadounidense durante casi dos años, fue el disco más vendido en el Reino Unido en 1965, -66 y -68 (segundo más vendido de la década tras 'Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band' de The Beatles) y en 2018 se añadió al Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.
